The selection of steel for storage racks is crucial. Here's a key analysis of steel for storage racks:
1. Material
- Q235B: This is one of the mainstream materials for storage racks in China. Its yield strength ≥235MPa, suitable for conventional heavy-duty racks (single-layer load-bearing 1-3 tons). It has a lower cost and good processing performance, but anti-corrosion treatment is needed in high-humidity environments.
- Q345B: Yield strength ≥345MPa, often used for extra heavy-duty racks (single-layer load-bearing 3-5 tons) or high-bay storage systems. This steel has high strength, reducing the column cross-sectional area and improving space utilization, but the cost is about 15%-20% higher than Q235B.
2. Thickness Standard
- Upright Thickness: The upright thickness of conventional heavy-duty racks is usually 2.5-3.0mm, which can meet the needs of a single-layer load-bearing capacity of 1-3 tons. The upright thickness of extra heavy-duty racks needs to be ≥4.0mm, and Q345B material is mostly used.
- Beam Thickness: Welded beams are made of two C-shaped steels welded together, with an effective thickness of 3.0mm, suitable for high load-bearing scenarios (such as 3 tons/layer). The bending strength is increased by 40% compared to ordinary square tube beams, but the cost is about 25% higher. The common thickness of one-piece square tube beams is 1.5-2.0mm, suitable for low load-bearing requirements (such as 1-2 tons/layer), and the load-bearing capacity can be increased by increasing the beam diameter.
3. Process
- Welding Process: The welds of the rack should be firm and uniform, without defects such as poor welds, missed welds, or weld beads. High-quality welding ensures the stability of the rack structure, which can be checked by observing the appearance of the weld and touching it by hand.
- Surface Treatment: Common surface treatments include powder coating and galvanizing. The powder coating should be uniform and smooth, without bubbles or peeling, effectively preventing rust and corrosion of the rack; the galvanized layer should be thick and tight, with good rust prevention performance.
4. Structural Design
- Column Section Design: Diamond hole columns are formed by punching, which can increase the contact area between the column and the beam and reduce stress concentration. The reinforced column welds reinforcing ribs on the back of the column to improve torsional stiffness.
- Connection Method: Bolt connection is convenient for disassembly and adjustment, using self-locking bolts and safety pins. In welded connections, gas shielded welding (such as CO₂ welding) can achieve a weld penetration depth ≥5mm, suitable for high load-bearing racks, but welding deformation needs to be strictly controlled.
The selection of steel for storage racks needs to consider multiple aspects to ensure that the quality, performance, and safety of the racks meet the actual application needs.
